THE TRENCH: A COAT FOR ALL SEASONS

Ask any of your friends to name one iconic coat, and without doubt, they would come up with the Trench. Not only has this timeless classic withstood the vagaries of fashion, but it has equally kept generations of stylish ladies dry and warm through the changing of the seasons – the perfect coat for all seasons.

The thing with the trench though is that it is stylish, but always understated. And so in order to make sure your trench makes something of a statement about you, I wanted to give you a few of my own personal tips.

Feps’ Tips #1

The perfect tip is crucial with any item of clothing – but even more so with the trench. So, make sure that the shoulders are not too wide, and that the sleeves are at a good length, especially if you’re wearing a blazer or a jacket underneath.

The trench is a double-breasted coat – and so comes with wider lapels – but make sure they are not too large, otherwise, they might take over the coat altogether

Feps’ Tips #2

If you’re wearing a cute dress, and want to show it off, then make sure you tie the coat’s trademark belt at the back. It makes your waist looks thinner too!

 Feps’ Tips #3

If you want to make the trench the main focus of your outfit, then it’s always best to wear something stark underneath.I’ve gone for a black outfit here, but a little black dress could work equally well. And why not spice things up with some knee high boots to finish off your look?

Feps’ Tips #4

Trench coats don’t just come in the classic beige, so don’t be afraid to try out something a little fresher, like a pastel shade, or something a little vibrant – like the red that I’ve gone for – or even the navy option, which works especially well in the evenings.

Feps’ Tips #5

For those of us with a more petite frame, I would advise a shorter trench (no longer than knee length).

Feps’ Tips #6

Another way to wear a trench coat is to rock the street style stars’ go-to look and place the trench coat over your shoulders, just like a cape.

Feps’ Tips #7

If you’re heading out on a rainy day, it’s best to wear your trench coat with leather leggings or leather jeans (like my ones below) and a pair of high knee boots.
