How to tackle the problem of smart casual

For my style tip today, I want to tell you how to address the conundrum that is “smart casual.”

Let’s deal with the “smart” first. Now, in my book there are few things that are smarter than a blazer. It doesn’t have to be the traditional navy – you can always go for a range of prints and colours – but if the trousers you are accompanying the jacket with are going to be a little more adventurous, then I would stick with a more formal version of the blazer. And in this case, they look great with the print of my trousers.

As you all know, it’s hard for me to say no to a pair of great heels – whether the occasion demands either casual or formal – and so I manage to include them in this outfit too.

Fernanda’s Rule Number 1: Accessories are Essential! And for me this is what adds that extra dash of spice to your outfit. This can be a belt, or a scarf, or jewellery – and equally a great pair of sunglasses too. If you are going for a pair of shades, then go for something that suits the shape and structure of your face, rather than for something that’s seen to be “in.” I have a small face, and so I’ve gone for a more modestly sized pair of Ray Ban Aviators. There are sunglasses by Tom Ford that work for me too. But do spend a little time on the glasses to make sure it fits your face first!

Fernanda’s Rule Number 2: Mix light colours! If you want to wear a nude outfit, have different shades of nude or even include other lighter colours such as grey and blue as I did in this case. I have gone for this top because the neutral shade works well with the rest of the outfit and as it also gives you a little more feeling of “casual” with the added shine that comes with it.

Fernanda’s Rule Number 3: Have something special! The trousers I have chosen really do bring something extra special to the outfit. I don’t know if this is because I am Brazilian and I come from a hot, beautiful and vibrant country that almost explodes with colour, but I do love the print of flowers as this gives me a more summery feeling even in the coldest months of the year! A holiday in the Tropics may not always be possible in January, but why not banish those winter blues with a dash of colour!
